Overview

This standard is about responding to accidents and incidents that occur airside. This involves acknowledging an incident or accident and being able to respond according to your training, limits of authority, organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures and relevant legal requirements. This also involves knowing when and how to alert colleagues to the incident or accident, raise the alarm, restrict access to affected areas and preserve evidence at the scene. You will also be able to record and report airside incidents, accidents and near misses, and contribute to incident and accident investigations.

This standard is for those who work in airports/airfields in airside operations.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Acknowledge and respond to an incident or accident using designated equipment as required in line with organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures, relevant legal requirements, your training and limits of your authority 
  2. Alert colleagues to the incident or accident in line with organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures and relevant legal requirements
  3. Approach an incident or accident in line with organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures, relevant legal requirements and within the limits of your authority
  4. Raise an emergency alarm in line with organisational and airside/airport/airline procedures and within the limits of your authority
  5. Restrict access to the site of the incident or accident and preserve evidence and the scene as required 
  6. Use the required personal protective equipment (PPE) to carry out your duties according to organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures and relevant legal requirements for responding to the airside incident or accident 
  7. Maintain your own, customers’ and colleagues’ health, safety and welfare when responding to airside incidents and accidents
  8. Record and report airside incidents, accidents and near misses in line with organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures, relevant safety management systems, and relevant legal requirements 
  9. Contribute to the investigation of airside incidents and accidents, according to organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures and policies, your training and limits of your authority 
  10. Restore normal operating conditions following the conclusion of the incident or accident in line with organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures and relevant legal requirements

1. The common types and causes of incidents and accidents that can occur airside 2. The categories of incident and accident according to airport/airfield and relevant legal requirements 3. Your organisation’s and the airside/airport/airline’s procedures and relevant legal requirements for responding to incidents and accidents airside 4. How to  approach and respond to an airside incident or accident using designated equipment 5. The limits of your responsibilities and authority when responding to an incident or accident airside 6. When and how to alert colleagues to an incident or accident airside 7. When and how to restrict access to the site of an incident or accident and preserve evidence and the scene  8. The personal protective equipment (PPE) to use when responding to an incident or accident airside 9. How to maintain your own, customers’ and colleagues’ health, safety and welfare when responding to airside incidents and accidents, and the importance of doing so 10. When and how to raise an emergency alarm in line with organisational and airside/airport/airfield procedures and the importance of doing so within the limits of your authority   11. The airside emergency areas such as fire assembly points and areas for emergency response vehicles 12. How to record and report airside incidents, accidents and near misses, and the importance of doing so 13. Your organisation’s and the airside/airport/airfield’s procedures and policies for investigating airside incidents, accidents and near misses 14. Your role in contributing to the investigation of airside incidents, accidents and near misses 15. When and how to restore normal operating conditions following the conclusion of the airside incident or accident
