This standard is about making sure you comply with healthy and safe working practices and that you understand the importance of maintaining the health and safety of the working environment. It outlines the rules, regulations and procedures which ensure a safe, healthy and secure work environment and identifies how to respond to hazards and emergencies which may arise.

This standard is for those working in aviation ground operations.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Carry out all aviation ground operations safely and in compliance with your organisation's and the airport/airfield's procedures and relevant legislative regulations relating to your job role 2. Wear mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) in line with relevant legislation and organisational  and airport/airfield procedures and relevant legal requirements 3. Identify and report health and safety risks, and rectify those which you can within the limits of your remit in line with organisational and airport/airfield  procedures and relevant legal requirements 4. Advise customers and colleagues when hazardous situations arise or may arise 5. Operate and store equipment safely in line with your organisation's and the airport/airfield's procedures and relevant legal requirements 6. Identify breakdowns, faults or abnormalities in equipment and take the necessary actions to maintain health, safety and security 7. Record and report incidents, accidents and near misses in line with your organisation's and the airport/airfield's procedures and relevant legal requirements 8. Follow your organisation's and the airport/airfield's emergency procedures and response protocols in the event of an emergency 9. Follow your organisation's and the airport/airfield's procedures for organisational identification (ID) at all times 10. Take action in line with your organisation’s and aerodrome procedures, and within the limits of your remit when security issues are identified 11. Maintain health, safety and security at all times in line with your organisation’s and airport/airfield's procedures and relevant legal requirements

1. The health, safety and security requirements of your working environment 2. What constitutes a healthy, safe and secure working environment 3. The types of hazards and risks that may occur within your working environment and how to identify and respond to them 4. The health and safety equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and materials in your work environment 5. Your organisation’s and the airport/airfield's health and safety systems and procedures, including the procedures to follow when dealing with hazardous substances and in emergency situations 6. How to operate and store equipment safely 7. The common types of equipment breakdowns, faults, abnormalities and hazards, and how to deal with them 8. The types of safety signs and their meanings in your working environment 9. The limits of your own remit 10. Your organisation’s and the airport/airfield's procedures for responding to and reporting incidents, accidents and near misses 11. How to maintain health, safety and security in line with your organisation’s and the airport/airfield's procedures and relevant legal requirements 12. Your organisation’s and the airport/airfield's procedures for recommending improvements to safety 13. The types of security threats or risks that may occur with your working environment and how to respond to them 14. Your organisation’s and the airport/airfield's security procedures 15. Your personal responsibilities and limits of authority when irregularities or discrepancies in security, or actual or suspected security threats are identified 16. The importance of maintaining workplace health, safety and security at all times
