Overview

This standard is about maintaining aviation motor vehicle security. This involves operating manual and/or electronic barriers and directing vehicles and customers to ensure that the aviation vehicle security environment is maintained. This also involves conducting motor vehicle searches, taking action to respond to prohibited or suspicious items if identified by the search, recording and reporting incidents, and completing the required documentation for all motor vehicles entering controlled or restricted areas.

This standard is for those undertaking aviation ground security activities.

When you have completed this standard, you will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to:

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Define the limits of the motor vehicle aviation security area 2. Meet your organisation’s standards for appearance and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) in line with your organisation’s procedures 3. Check security barriers for damage and defects in line with organisational procedures 4. Operate security barriers to control motor vehicle access in line with organisational procedures 5. Direct motor vehicles into the aviation security area following the airport’s standard operating procedures 6. Follow organisational procedures for controlling access to motor vehicles responding to an emergency 7. Ensure the motor vehicle security environment is maintained at all times 8. Inform the occupants of the motor vehicle of the search being carried out 9. Instruct the occupants to exit the motor vehicle and remove any items which do not belong in the vehicle for screening 10. Confirm all customers have left the vehicle and are directed to the screening area 11. Communicate to colleagues any information which may affect the vehicle checking process, the search of the vehicle or screening process 12. Carry out searches of motor vehicles in line with organisational procedures 13. Maintain your own, customers’ and colleagues’ health, safety and welfare when searching motor vehicles in aviation 14. Carry out searches of motor vehicles at frequencies and in patterns according to your organisation’s policies and procedures 15. Take the required action if you detect prohibited or suspicious items during a motor vehicle search 16. Confirm the motor vehicle is safe to enter the controlled area in line with your organisation’s procedures 17. Record and report incidents which may occur when maintaining aviation motor vehicle security in line with your organisation’s procedures 18. Complete, record and store the details of all motor vehicles entering the controlled area, the searches carried out and prohibited or suspicious items if found, according to your organisation’s policies and procedures and relevant legal requirements
