When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:
- Choose and agree retail merchandise to be featured in retail displays
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- evaluate the potential of merchandise to attract retail customers' attention and interest
- choose merchandise that is the most likely to attract and interest retail customers, meets the requirements of retail displays and is consistent with your workplace procedures, brand guidelines and relevant legislation
- check the suitability and availability of retail merchandise that is to be featured in the displays with the relevant decision makers following your workplace procedures
- reach agreement with relevant decision makers concerning realistic arrangements and timescales for supply following your workplace procedures
- make any additional arrangements promptly to acquire merchandise if it is not otherwise available within the timescales and cost limits following your workplace procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to compare selected merchandise with retail display requirements
- how to check whether merchandise that will be featured in the retail displays is available
- how to arrange for merchandise to be delivered
- why retail displays are used to attract the interest of retail customers and persuade them to make buying decisions
- how light, colour, texture, shape and dimension combine to achieve the visual effects required
- why there is an expectation to show creativity in selecting merchandise for retail displays and to be aware of trends
- how retail displays can achieve add-on sales
- other approaches to use for displaying different kinds of merchandise
- the different purposes of retail displays and their use in visual merchandising
- your workplace procedure and relevant legislation for merchandising and visual design
- the decision makers that need to agree the choices of retail merchandise to be featured
