This standard is about assessing how effective displays prepared by retail staff under supervision are in a retail organisation. Specialist visual merchandising skills are not required.

This standard is for staff who have responsibility for assessing how effective displays are within the workplace.

When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

  • Assess how effective displays are in a retail organisation

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify what standards the display should meet following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation
  2. check displays against all the relevant legislation and workplace standards to decide how effective they are
  3. encourage staff to make comments and identify changes that may make the display more appealing to customers following your workplace procedures
  4. ask the correct person for permission to make any changes not within your authority following your workplace procedures
  5. give staff clear instructions and encouragement so that they can make any changes required to the display following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation
  6. take prompt and suitable action to deal with any risks to security or health and safety that the assessment has revealed following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation

You need to know and understand:

  1. the standards that should be applied when assessing how effective displays are in your workplace following your workplace procedures and relevant legislation
  2. how to assess displays for effectiveness against the relevant legislation and workplace standards
  3. how to identify displays that are unsafe or not secure enough according to relevant legislation requirements and your workplace procedures
  4. how to correct displays that are unsafe or not secure enough
  5. who can authorise changes to the display in your workplace
  6. how to involve staff in assessing and changing displays
