When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

  • Process applications from retail customers for credit facilities

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify customers' requests for credit facilities following your workplace procedures
  2. explain clearly to customers the features and conditions of credit facilities following relevant legislation and your workplace procedures
  3. provide enough time and opportunities for customers to ask for clarification or more information following your workplace procedures
  4. obtain and record all information necessary for decisions to be made about applications for credit facilities in accordance with your workplace procedures.
  5. seek clarification from customers when information provided reveals discrepancies or inconsistencies
  6. follow your workplace procedures to carry out the necessary credit checks and authorisation procedures in order for the application to be processed
  7. inform customers of the decision and the terms and conditions that apply
  8. obtain the customer's agreement to the facility in accordance with your workplace procedures
  9. refer applications outside your authority to appropriate people in accordance with your organisation’s procedures
  10. refer unsuccessful applications for credit facilities to the correct person promptly following your workplace procedures
  11. keep accurate and up-to-date records in accordance with your
    workplace procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the types of credit facility which you are authorised to deal with
  2. features and conditions of the credit facilities offered by your workplace and any other external organisations used in the application process
  3. the relevant legislation and your workplace requirements for giving information to customers when offering them credit facilities
  4. the relevant legislation and your workplace procedures for carrying out credit checks and getting authorisation for credit facilities
  5. how to deal with situations where the information provided reveals discrepancies or inconsistencies
  6. who to approach for advice and help in resolving unsuccessful applications, either internally or externally as appropriate
  7. appropriate methods of communicating decisions to customers
