This standard is about identifying customers' specific requirements for goods they want to order and checking the availability of the goods from suppliers and on which terms they will be supplied. This can include face to face, over the phone or online requests by customers. It is also about keeping customers informed.

This standard is for staff who check the availability of goods for customer orders.

When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow your workplace procedures to identify goods that will meet customers' requirements and check with customers that these are satisfactory
  2. identify customers' requirements accurately by asking open questions to get correct details
  3. find out who can supply the goods required and on what terms following your workplace procedures
  4. check the availability of goods so customers’ orders can be fulfilled
  5. keep customers informed of progress in finding the goods they require following your workplace procedures
  6. let customers know when orders cannot be met following your workplace procedures
  7. suggest alternatives or other suppliers of goods
  8. give customers clear, accurate and complete information about the availability of goods and the terms of supply following your workplace procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to ask the correct questions to find out exactly what customers want
  2. which goods are held in stock in your workplace
  3. your workplace procedures for checking whether there are sufficient goods to meet the order
  4. which goods are available to order and which suppliers and manufacturers can provide them
  5. your workplace procedures for checking whether external suppliers and manufacturers can provide goods, and on what terms
  6. why customers need to be kept informed of progress in finding the goods they require
  7. your workplace procedures on how to let customers know when orders cannot be fulfilled and ways to advise customers of alternatives or other suppliers
  8. why customers must be given clear, accurate and complete information about the terms of supply
