Overview
This standard is about receiving deliveries, checking goods, refusing them if they are faulty and updating the stock control systems and records. These records can be electronic/digital or paper based. This standard is also about ensuring the storage arrangements are suitable and locations are fit for purpose. This standard does not involve physically moving deliveries into storage.
This standard is for all staff who receive deliveries and check storage arrangements for goods in a retail organisation.
When you have completed this standard you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to:

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- check that the type, quantity and quality of goods received are acceptable according to your workplace requirements
- follow your workplace procedures for refusing incorrect or damaged deliveries
- record any refusals accurately and tell the correct person about them promptly following your workplace procedures
- check deliveries following your workplace procedures using methods that are safe and that protect the goods from damage or contamination
- follow relevant legislation and your workplace procedures for goods to be removed from delivery vehicles and placed in the allocated holding or storage areas
- update stock control systems promptly and accurately following your workplace procedures
- identify storage arrangements and conditions for goods received into storage
- check that suitable storage locations are available and fit for purpose
- inform the correct person immediately when storage locations are insufficient
- check that suitable handling equipment is available for use
- follow relevant legislation and your workplace procedures for maintaining safety and security when receiving goods into storage
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- your workplace requirements for checking the type, quantity and quality of goods received
- your workplace requirements procedures for dealing with incorrect or damaged goods
- why and how goods must be handled safely, hygienically and without damage to them
- what your workplace requirements are for removing goods from delivery vehicles
- what your workplace requirements are for updating stock records and systems
- how to check that suitable storage locations and arrangements are available and fit for purpose
- who to report to if storage locations are insufficient
- the handling equipment used for storing goods and how to check it is available to use
- where deliveries of goods should be placed after being removed from delivery vehicles
- the relevant legislation for maintaining security and safety while receiving deliveries
- your workplace requirements for maintaining security and safety while receiving deliveries
