What *is* *this* *standard* *about?*

Achievement of this standard demonstrates your competence in managing effective safety, health, and environmental systems. You will be able to review audits and analyse data, developing plans for, and implementing or improving systems which will be continually monitored and reviewed. 

Who *is* *this* *standard* *for?*

This standard is applicable to anyone at a supervisory or managerial level approved to carry out this function working in the mineral extractive sector.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Conduct your work in line with relevant regulation, legislation, and industry best practice
  2. Review audits and inspections for safety, health, and environmental considerations
  3. Analyse safety, health, and environmental data and identify trends
  4. Develop SMART implementation and monitoring plans
  5. Engage stakeholders, by implementing company procedures, to take an active role in implementation plans

  6. Implement and/or improve systems for maintaining both safety and health

  7. Implement and/or improve systems of environmental management
  8. Monitor relevant safety, health, and environmental systems to identify changes or anomalies
  9. Maintain accurate records of systems, plans, audits, inspections, and incidents
  10. Evaluate changes against prior performance
  11. Provide information about your activities to nominated personnel

You need to know and understand:

  1. Relevant regulation, legislation, company policies and procedures, and industry best practice
  2. How relevant stakeholders are identified
  3. Where to find and how to access relevant advice and reliable supporting information
  4. The benefits of effective safety, health, and environmental systems
  5. How the understanding of and commitment to safety, health, and environmental systems are established
  6. How other organisations influence industry standards
  7. The external accreditation process for safety, health, and environmental management systems
  8. Relevant safe systems of work
  9. The importance of monitoring safety, health, and environmental systems
  10. The techniques for monitoring the effectiveness of safety, health, and environmental systems
  11. Breaches of statutory duty and lines of defence
  12. The resolution of breaches and deficiencies in safety, health, and environmental systems
  13. How to write SMART objectives in order to deliver, monitor and evaluate improvement
