This standard is applicable to anyone at a supervisory or managerial level approved to carry out this function working in the mineral extraction sector.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Conduct your work in line with relevant regulation, legislation, and industry best practice
  2. Prepare documentation and supporting materials for an investigation
  3. Select, check and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the investigation
  4. Investigate safety, health, and environmental incidents
  5. Review the results of investigations into safety, health, and environmental incidents
  6. Establish and maintain accurate records and reports in line with regulations, legislation, company policies and procedure, and industry best practice
  7. Communicate your findings across your company hierarchy within organisational timescales

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. Relevant regulation, legislation, company policies and procedures, and industry best practice

  2. How to select, check, and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task

  3. Techniques and methodologies of incident investigations
  4. Methods for the critical analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data

  6. The resources required for the investigation
  7. Methods for gathering reliable information and evidence to support an investigation
  8. Ways of assessing failures and identifying root causes
  9. Methods for ascertaining the impact of any resulting injuries and/or damage
  10. The direct and indirect costs of an incident, and how they are calculated
  11. What constitutes an emergency
  12. Why you must conduct, monitor and review safety drills
  13. The development of SMART action plans for the implementation of any resulting recommendations
