What *is* *this* *standard* *about?*

Achievement of this standard demonstrates your competence in assessing safety, health, and environmental hazards and risks, aspects and impacts. You will be able to carry out assessments and continually monitor and review operations, proactively identifying any potential future hazards and assisting in any implementation of improvements.  

Who *is* *this* *standard* *for?*

This standard is applicable to anyone at a supervisory or managerial level authorised to carry out this function working in the mineral extractive sector.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Conduct your work in line with relevant regulation, legislation, and industry best practice 2. Analyse **resources** to identify safety and health hazards, environmental aspects, and control measures  3. Select, check and use the appropriate **Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)** for the assessment 4. Carry out site inductions  5. Assess individuals in your area of responsibility to ensure they are **competent** to carry out their role 6. Carry out assessments of hazards, risks, aspects, and impacts 7. Monitor site production activities for hazards, risks, aspects, and impacts  8. Interpret a site plan to check for potential future hazards and environmental aspects 9. Record assessment results following your organisations policies and procedures 10. Provide nominated or identified personnel with the results of your assessment 11. Assist relevant parties in the implementation of improvements to safety, health, and environmental aspects 12. Continually monitor and review controls to hazards, risks, aspects, and impacts

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. The relevant regulation, legislation, and how your company’s policies and procedures meet these
  2. The definitions of relevant terminology
  3. How to select, check and use the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task
  4. Equipment manufacturer and suppliers guidance and/or instructions, 
  5. The importance and relevance of protective devices and correct plant maintenance 
  6. Hazardous substance data
  7. The definitions of people who may be on site, as described in the regulation(s)
  8. Any training needs specific to tasks undertaken on the site
  9. Safe systems of work and permits to work
  10. The hierarchy of risk control
  11. Routine hazards and aspects encountered in your place of work and the methodologies for controling them
  12. How to identify, and when to assess any site specific hazards and risks
  13. How to identify, and when to assess any site specific aspects and impacts
  14. The personnel who may need to see any results from your activity
