What is this standard about? This standard specifies the skills, knowledge and understanding required to demonstrate competence in the operation of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) which are used as a means to access high places to enable work activities to be carried out within extractives and mineral products settings. Who is this standard for? This standard is applicable to any person operating mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs)"
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- conduct your work in line with relevant regulations, legislation and safe working practices to maintain a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace.
- interpret the given operating information relating to the use of mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) and confirm its relevance
- identify valid certification for maintenance, inspection and examination of the MEWP
- communicate with others and work as part of a team when operating the MEWP
- identify the hazards and risks associated with operating the MEWP
- select, check and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the work activity
- protect the work and surrounding area to prevent damage, maintain a clean workspace and dispose of waste in line with safe working practices
- identify the work area where you will operate the MEWP
- carry out pre-operational checks for obstructions, changes in stability, safety and security of the work and surrounding area
- use fall prevention equipment when operating the MEWP
- check to avoid damage to structures and utility services
- work within your own level of competence and seek assistance and advice when required
- position, set up and secure platform for accessing operations
- operate MEWP in accordance with given working instructions to meet the required specification

- relevant regulations, legislation, company policies and procedures, safe working practices and operating information
- why it is important to check the certification for maintenance and inspection before operating the mobile elevated work platform (MEWP)
- how to select, check and wear the appropriate PPE for the task
- the importance of fall protection equipment when operating MEWPs
- how to report problems with the plant, equipment and operating information
- who to notify when conducting accessing operations
- how to protect the work and surrounding area when operating MEWPs
- why it is important to take responsibility for your own behaviour and standards of work
- why you must conduct a pre-operational check of the work and surrounding area
- how to identify obstructions and changes in stability, safety and security of the work and surrounding area
