"What is this standard about?
This standard specifies the skills, knowledge and understanding required to demonstrate competence in the preparation of plant to ensure it is in a satisfactory condition before operation.
Who is this standard for?
This standard is applicable to any person who is required to operate plant and who needs to prepare the plant before they begin operations within the mineral products sector."
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- conduct your work in line with relevant regulations, legislation and safe working practices to maintain a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace.
- interpret the given operating information relating to the preparation of plant and confirm its relevance
- communicate with others and maintain records relating to the preparation of plant
- select, check and wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for preparing plant
- check the plant is in a safe condition and suitable location for the inspections to be carried out
- request, select and use resources for the preparation of plant
- store and dispose of resources in line with safe working practices
- work within your own level of competence and seek assistance and advice when required
- conduct pre-use, start-up and function checks on plant in line with site, organisation and manufacturers’ guidance and safe working practices.

You need to know and understand:
- relevant regulations, legislation, company policies and procedures, safe working practices and operating information
- how to select, check and wear the appropriate PPE for preparing plant
- how to request, select and use resources appropriate to the preparation of plant

- what constitutes a safe location for the preparation of plant
- the importance of pre-use and function checks
- the limits of your own responsibility and competence and when to seek assistance or advice from others
- why it is important to take responsibility for your own behaviour and standards of work
- the hazards associated with the preparation of plant
- how maintenance of plant is carried out
