This standard is about assisting the veterinary surgeon in preparing sedation and anaesthesia materials and equipment for veterinary procedures. This standard is suitable for registered veterinary nurses.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. assess the risks to the health and safety of yourself and colleagues while preparing materials and equipment for sedation and anaesthesia 2. wear the required clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) when assisting the veterinary surgeon in preparing sedation and anaesthesia materials and equipment 3. work with the veterinary surgeon to perform and complete a recognised veterinary patient safety sheet 4. confirm with the veterinary surgeon the required sedative or anaesthetic equipment, monitoring equipment, materials and inhalation agents (IA) for the veterinary procedure 5. select and implement the required veterinary practice infection control procedures relevant to the area of the veterinary practice you are working in 6. prepare sedative or anaesthetic equipment, monitoring equipment, materials and  inhalation agents (IA) according to the anaesthetic and veterinary procedures required 7. calculate the anaesthetic required for the veterinary patient and confirm your results with the veterinary surgeon 8. position all equipment, materials and inhalation agents (IA) in the correct location to support the veterinary procedure 9. select the required anaesthetic circuit and calculate flow rate as required 10. check and maintain sedative or anaesthetic equipment and materials according to manufacturer's instructions, veterinary practice schedules and procedures 11. comply with the relevant regulations and guidelines relating to the use, sale and disposal of anaesthetic equipment, materials and inhalation agents (IA) at all times 12. comply with relevant animal health and welfare legislation and codes of practice 13. carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and   safety legislations, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and business policies

You need to know and understand:

1. how to assess the risks to the health and safety of yourself and colleagues involved in preparing materials and equipment for sedation and anaesthesia 2. the required clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) for assisting with preparing sedation and anaesthetic materials and equipment 3. the information required to complete the veterinary patient safety sheet and the anaesthetic procedures to be used 4. the equipment, materials and sedation or anaesthetic agents used for veterinary procedures and why you must obtain guidance from the veterinary surgeon about this 5. the required veterinary practice infection control procedures relevant to the area of the veterinary practice you are working in 6. how to prepare sedation or anaesthetic equipment, materials and inhalation agents (IA) 7. where sedation or anaesthetic equipment, materials and inhalation agents (IA) should be positioned for anaesthetic and veterinary procedures 8. the relevant regulations and guidelines relating to the use of sedation or anaesthetic equipment, materials and inhalation agents (IA) 9. how to handle and use materials and inhalation agents (IA), maintain scavenging systems and safely dispose of waste 10. the faults that occur in sedation or anaesthetic equipment and materials that affect their function, reliability, safety and effectiveness and the correct actions to take if these occur 11. how to check and maintain sedation and anaesthesia equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, veterinary practice schedules and procedures 12. the medical principles and key points of the relevant health and safety regulations and guidelines 13. the professional roles and responsibilities of the veterinary team members involved in preparing sedation and anaesthesia materials and equipment 14. your responsibilities for the health and welfare of animals under the relevant legislation and codes of practice 15. your professional responsibilities as a registered veterinary nurse 16. your responsibility under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislations, codes of practice and business policies
