Overview
This standard covers establishing, monitoring and maintaining livestock in indoor accommodation. This includes monitoring the continued suitability of the indoor accommodation to support the livestock and recognising changes in the condition or behaviour of the livestock. You must be able to take the appropriate action where such changes are identified.
When working with livestock or machinery you should be trained, and hold the current certification where required, in accordance with the relevant legislation.
When carrying out your work you must consider the impact it will have on the environment, and work towards preserving and improving habitats and biodiversity and responding to and mitigating the effects of climate change.
This standard is suitable for those responsible for the establishment, monitoring and maintenance of livestock in indoor accommodation.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- assess the risks associated with the activity to be carried out
- wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- maintain hygiene and bio-security, in accordance with business practices
- select, prepare, use, maintain and store the required equipment and materials, safely and correctly
- confirm that the indoor accommodation is suitable for the livestock being housed, has been prepared ready for their introduction and is clean, safe and secure
- confirm that suitable bedding is provided
- confirm that the supply of feed and clean water meets livestock and legal requirements
- confirm that the environmental conditions are suitable for the livestock being housed
- establish the livestock in the indoor accommodation in a manner that minimises stress, maintains their health and welfare and maintains your own safety
- monitor the livestock to assess their on-going health and welfare while in the indoor accommodation and take the required action where there are any changes
- monitor the supply of feed and water, in accordance with livestock requirements and environmental conditions
- monitor the environmental conditions in the indoor accommodation and take action to maintain the required conditions
- maintain the indoor accommodation, in accordance with the livestock requirements
- maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in, or affected by, your work
- process waste safely and correctly, in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and business practices
- carry out all work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and business policies
- complete records as required by the relevant legislation and the business
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the potential hazards to livestock and people that may occur in indoor livestock accommodation and how these can be minimised
- the type of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for the activity
- the importance of maintaining hygiene and bio-security and the methods for achieving this
- the types of equipment and materials required and how to prepare, maintain and use these, safely and correctly
- the relationship between the indoor accommodation and the health and welfare of the livestock
- the types of accommodation suitable for the livestock being housed and their production cycle
- the importance of cleaning out the accommodation and the methods of doing this
- the correct stocking densities and space requirements for the livestock, in line with the relevant regulations, codes of practice and business requirements
- how to assess whether the indoor accommodation is suitable for the livestock and has been prepared
- the requirements for bedding for the livestock being housed
- the requirements livestock have for feed and water in indoor accommodation and the relevant legal requirements
- the methods of handling and establishing livestock in the indoor accommodation that minimise stress and maintain the animals’ safety
- the methods for monitoring livestock to maintain their health and welfare and the potential consequences of failing to do so
- how to recognise healthy livestock and signs of ill-health
- the environmental conditions that the livestock require in their accommodation to maintain their health and welfare, and the importance of monitoring this and taking the required action to deal with variations
- the actions required to maintain the indoor accommodation in a suitable condition for the livestock
- the types of problems that may occur with livestock in indoor accommodation and the actions to be taken
- the importance of maintaining communication with those involved in, or affected by, your work and how this should be done
- how to handle, store, transport and dispose of waste, in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and business practices
