Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. assess the risks associated with the activity to be carried out

    1. wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)

    2. select, prepare, use, maintain and store the required equipment

    and materials, safely and correctly

    1. carry out the cleaning of livestock accommodation, in accordance

    with instructions and relevant legal requirements, in a way which

    maintains your health and safety and the health and welfare of the

    livestock

    1. prepare the indoor accommodation for the introduction of livestock

    in accordance with instructions

    1. check and confirm that the accommodation is safe, secure and

    free from hazards, in accordance with instructions and relevant

    animal health and welfare requirements

    1. check and confirm that fittings are adjusted, replenished or

    replaced and are in a suitable condition for the introduction of

    livestock

    1. provide accommodation materials in accordance with

    instructions

    1. check and confirm that environmental conditions are suitable for

    the introduction of livestock

    1. maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in,

    or affected by, your work

    1. maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with business

    practices

    1. process waste safely and correctly in accordance with relevant

    legal requirements and business practices

    1. carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental and

    health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare legislation,

    risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and business

    policies

    1. complete records as required by relevant legislation and the

    business


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to identify hazards and assess risks

    1. the type of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)

    suitable for the activity

    1. the types of equipment and materials required for preparing

    indoor accommodation for livestock and how to prepare, use,

    maintain and store these safely and correctly

    1. the types and size of accommodation suitable for livestock being

    housed and how these will vary at different stages of the

    production cycle

    1. the cleaning routines for livestock accommodation appropriate to

    the species concerned and the type of accommodation

    1. how to handle, store, transport and dispose of waste in

    accordance with relevant legal requirements and business

    practices

    1. your responsibilities for the welfare of livestock under relevant

    animal health and welfare legislation, codes of practice and

    business policies

    1. your responsibilities under relevant environmental and health and

    safety legislation, codes of practice and business policies

    1. the records that need to be kept and the importance of completing
