Overview
This standard covers monitoring and maintaining the preparation of birds ready for fertilisation. Fertilisation may take place by artificial insemination (AI) or by natural means. This standard covers the planning of bird requirements for fertilisation and ensuring that the handling of birds is in accordance with relevant welfare requirements. You are likely to have overall responsibility for this part of production and be supported in this capacity by other workers. You will require considerable knowledge and practical skills and must be capable of identifying and resolving problems that occur. When working with livestock or machinery you should be trained and hold current certification, where required. This standard is suitable for those with responsibility for monitoring and maintaining the preparation of birds for fertilisation.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:

fertilisation
7. select birds for fertilisation at the optimum time in line with the
reproduction plan
8. monitor the preparation of birds for fertilisation
9. monitor and maintain the environmental conditions to ensure
fertilisation takes place, in accordance with reproduction plan
10. monitor and maintain the handling and collection of birds, in
accordance with relevant legislative and welfare requirements
11. maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in
the work
12. maintain hygiene and bio-security, in accordance with business
practices
13. manage waste safely and correctly, in accordance with relevant
legislation and business practices
14. carry out your work in accordance with relevant environmental
and health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare
legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and
organisation policies
15. confirm that records are maintained and stored as required by
relevant legislation and the organisation"

required

14. the correct environmental conditions required for fertilisation
15. the birds' requirements for feed and water and how these should
be supplied
