Receive and select eggs for hatching
Overview
This standard covers receiving and selecting eggs for hatching. You are required to correctly identify incoming eggs in terms of source and codes. You are also required to check that eggs are at the right level of cleanliness, in accordance with instructions. When working with livestock or machinery you should be trained and hold current certification, where required. This standard is suitable for those who receive and select eggs for hatching.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
be aware of hazards associated with the activity to be carried out
wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
select, prepare, use and maintain the required tools, equipment
and materials, safely and correctly
check that the work area is safe and suitable for use
receive incoming eggs accurately by source, number and code

handle, grade and tray eggs ready for incubation and hatching in
accordance with instructions
- remove and dispose of eggs that are unsuitable for incubation, in
accordance with instructions
identify and store selected eggs, in accordance with instructions
maintain the storage environment in accordance with
instructions
- leave the work area and equipment in a condition that is suitable
for its subsequent use
- maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in
your work
- maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with
instructions
- process waste safely and correctly, in accordance with
instructions
- carry out your work in accordance with relevant environmental
and health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare
legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and
business policies
- complete records as required by the relevant legislation and the
business

You need to know and understand:
