Prepare and supply feed and water to livestock
Overview
This standard covers the preparation and supply of feed and water to livestock. This will be in accordance with dietary, veterinary and production requirements. When working with livestock or equipment you should be trained and hold current certification, where required. When carrying out your work you must consider the impact it will have on the environment. This standard is suitable for those who prepare and supply feed and water to livestock.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
assess the risks associated with the activity to be carried out
wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
select, prepare, use and maintain the equipment required to
prepare feed for livestock, safely and correctly
- check that the equipment used to supply feed and water to
livestock is safe, clean and in good condition and working order
- maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with business
practices
store livestock feed correctly in the required conditions
carry out stock rotation where required
monitor feed stock quality and levels and report these to the
appropriate person
- check that the facilities for storing and preparing feed and water
are clean and free from pests and vermin
- prepare feed for livestock in accordance with the dietary
programme and instructions
- supply feed to livestock in the correct quantities in accordance
with the dietary programme and instructions
- maintain a supply of clean, fresh water, in accordance with
livestock requirements
- maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in,
or affected by, your work
- process waste safely and correctly, in accordance with relevant
legal requirements and business practices
- carry out your work in accordance with relevant environmental
and health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare
legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and
business policies
- complete records as required by relevant legislation and the
business
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
how to identify hazards and assess risks
- the type of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
suitable for the activity
- the types of equipment required for the preparation of feed for
livestock and how to prepare, use and maintain these safely and
correctly
- the methods of cleaning and maintaining the equipment used to
supply feed and water to livestock, and checking that it is in good
condition and full working order and cannot injure the livestock
- the hygiene and bio-security requirements in relation to preparing
and supplying feed and water to livestock
- the type of storage facility and the conditions required for the
storage of livestock feed
- the importance of cleaning the facility and equipment used to
store and prepare feed
- the signs of pests and vermin and the action to take if these are
found
- the methods of preventing damage or contamination to livestock
feed stocks
the purpose of stock rotation
the importance of maintaining required stock levels of feed and
how to report when stocks need to be re-ordered
- the type, quality and quantity of feed needed to meet livestock
requirements, in accordance with the dietary programme
the correct methods for preparing and supplying feed to livestock

meet livestock requirements and the different methods of
supplying water to livestock
- the importance of maintaining communication with those involved
in, or affected by, your work and how this should be done
- how to handle, transport, store and dispose of waste in
accordance with relevant legal requirements and business

animal health and welfare legislation, codes of practice and
