Overview
This standard covers the handling of refrigerants. It includes any activities that involve the handling of refrigerants associated with air-conditioning/climate control and/or refrigeration systems (e.g. recovery, flushing and/or recharging).
This standard is for those who work with refrigerants.
Note: anyone who handles refrigerants should hold a valid certificate that complies with current F gas handling regulations.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- be aware of the hazards and risks associated with the handling of refrigerants
- use suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling refrigerants
- identify the type and capacities of the refrigerant and use the tools and equipment required to handle refrigerants and carry out all activities in line with the manufacturers’ specifications
- collect and transfer any waste material in accordance with the relevant legislation and company procedures
- complete records as required by the relevant legislation and company procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the hazards and risks associated with refrigerant handling
- the importance of selecting, using and maintaining appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling refrigerants
- the health and safety and environmental legislation covering the handling and disposal of refrigerants
- the procedures relevant to the safe handling of refrigerants
- the operating principles and function of mobile air-conditioning (MAC) and/or fixed plant refrigeration systems and components
- the types of legal refrigerants and their properties, characteristics and environmental impact
- how to recognise the characteristics associated with different refrigerant handling equipment including basic and automatic equipment
- how to handle refrigerants in mobile air-conditioning and/or fixed plant refrigeration systems
- how to work in a way that minimises the risk of any refrigerant emissions
- the legal requirement to maintain records and the company procedure for maintaining records
