Overview


This standard covers the handling of refrigerants. It includes any activities that involve the handling of refrigerants associated with air-conditioning/climate control and/or refrigeration systems (e.g. recovery, flushing and/or recharging).

This standard is for those who work with refrigerants.

Note: anyone who handles refrigerants should hold a valid certificate that complies with current F gas handling regulations.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:


  1. be aware of the hazards and risks associated with the handling of refrigerants
  2. use suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling refrigerants
  3. identify the type and capacities of the refrigerant and use the tools and equipment required to handle refrigerants and carry out all activities in line with the manufacturers’ specifications
  4. collect and transfer any waste material in accordance with the relevant legislation and company procedures
  5. complete records as required by the relevant legislation and company procedures


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


  1. the hazards and risks associated with refrigerant handling
  2. the importance of selecting, using and maintaining appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling refrigerants
  3. the health and safety and environmental legislation covering the handling and disposal of refrigerants
  4. the procedures relevant to the safe handling of refrigerants
  5. the operating principles and function of mobile air-conditioning (MAC) and/or fixed plant refrigeration systems and components
  6. the types of legal refrigerants and their properties, characteristics and environmental impact
  7. how to recognise the characteristics associated with different refrigerant handling equipment including basic and automatic equipment
  8. how to handle refrigerants in mobile air-conditioning and/or fixed plant refrigeration systems
  9. how to work in a way that minimises the risk of any refrigerant emissions
  10. the legal requirement to maintain records and the company procedure for maintaining records
