Overview

This standard is for those who install hardstanding individual bed preparation that is used within the landscaping industries.

The standard is suitable for operatives working under limited supervision and focuses on the skills required both to understand the structure and undertake the installation of hard-surface individual bed preparation while working to specifications.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. assess the risks associated with installing hardstanding individual bed preparation and the proposed work

  4. set out for line and level
  5. place and prepare a suitable laying course

  8. clean, maintain and store tools and equipment promptly and securely
  9. protect working areas correctly against weather and use after the installation of hardstanding individual bed preparation until they are in a suitable condition
  10. leave the site safe, tidy and suitable for intended use

  15. your responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice and organisational policies

Scope/range

A.       select and use the following types of tools and equipment when installing hardstanding individual bed preparation:

  1. spades/shovels
  2. rakes/lutes/spazzles
  3. trowels/floats

B.       manually prepare a laying course in the following situations:

  1. flat area
  2. area with a sudden change of fall (summit)
  3. area with a sudden change of fall (valley) 

C.      manually prepare a laying course using the following materials:

  1. fine aggregate for conventional paving
  2. coarse aggregate for permeable paving
  3. cement bound material for rigid pavements
