This standard is for those who identify plants for use in botanical collections.

This standard relates to understanding botanical nomenclature and implementing this knowledge for plant identification and classification.

You must carry out your work in a way which will minimise the impact on the natural environment


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. use key components in plant structure to aid identification of plants to family, genus and species level for use in botanical collections 2. use relevant sources of information including data storage systems to aid plant identification 3. record plant species using an appropriate plant record management system  4. identify non-invasive, non-native, invasive and protected species and act accordingly 5. name and label plants in accordance with the International Code of Nomenclature 6. determine the scientific/horticultural significance of plant provenance 7. carry out your work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and organisational policies

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. plant health regulations when sourcing plants for use in botanical collections  2. the meaning of descriptive botanical names 3. botanical nomenclature as it relates to relevant and correct use of taxonomic terms 4. how to source information to aid identification of plants for use in botanical collections from relevant organisations  5. the relevant procedure for the registration of cultivar names 6. knowledge of reference sources, taxonomic works, plant keys and their limitations when identifying plants for use in botanical collections 7. the historical context of plant classification systems  8. the relevant plant recording and mapping systems required for identifying plants for use in botanical collections 9. plant labels and their use within relevant data storage systems within horticulture 10. the International Code of Nomenclature of plants 11. plant collection data and its scientific significance to identifying plants 12. non-invasive, non-native, invasive and protected species and what action to take if they are discovered 13. your responsibilities under relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and organisational policies
