Overview

This standard is for those who establish and maintain artificial plant displays. It is for individuals who carry out the work described, under limited supervision only.

This will involve selecting, handling, transporting and preparing artificial plants, containers and supports. It will also involve installing the plants, supporting and tying-in according to the plant display specifications.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. establish customer requirements for the artificial plant displays 2. select the artificial plants and other materials for the display to meet specifications 3. handle and transport materials for artificial plant displays safely and correctly 4. select, prepare and use tools and equipment safely and correctly to establish and maintain artificial plant displays  5. prepare the artificial plants and other materials according to the specifications 6. check that grouping and positioning of artificial plants and materials have the required visual impact 7. use methods of support which are consistent with the intended purpose of the artificial plant display 8. dispose of or recycle waste and excess materials safely in accordance with relevant legal requirements and to minimise environmental risk 9. minimise the damage to artificial plants, features and surrounding areas  10. carry out maintenance of artificial plant displays safely and correctly 11. maintain communication with those involved in, or affected by, your work 12. restore the site to the client’s satisfaction 13. carry out your work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and organisational policies

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the importance of establishing the customer's requirements for the artificial plant displays

  2. how to select materials appropriate to different types of artificial displays and sites 

  3. how to handle and transport the materials safely and correctly

  4. how to select, prepare, use and maintain tools and equipment safely and correctly to establish and maintain artificial plant displays

  5. how to group and position artificial plants in a way that achieves the intended visual impact

  6. how to confirm support methods are consistent with the artificial plant displays

  7. why it is important to minimise unnecessary waste and the correct methods for recycling or disposal

  8. the importance of maintaining the appearance of artificial plant displays 

  9. how to carry out the maintenance of artificial plant displays safely and correctly

  10. the importance of maintaining communication with those involved in, or affected by, your work

  11. why it is important that the site is restored to the client’s satisfaction and how to judge whether this has been done

  12. the importance of following environmental and ecological best practice to help minimise the impact of your work on the environment

  13. your responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation, codes of practice and organisational policies
