Support participants on a shoot day
Overview
This standard is about supporting participants on a shoot day. It relates to the work activities that you undertake when advising and coaching participants on live quarry shoot days.
This standard is aimed at those provide support on either a full- or part- time basis.
To meet this standard you will be able to:
- describe the requirements of the shoot day to participants
- provide information on shooting etiquette
- provide information on quarry species and their expected behaviour
- provide information on gun usage and safety
- maintain customer relations
- coach individuals on the development of their shooting abilities.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- carry out work safely in line with relevant health and safety requirements
- gain an understanding of the participants’ level of experience
- ensure that participants understand the basic requirements of the shoot day
- support the participants to prepare for the planned shoot day activities
- provide information to participants, to support their understanding of the shooting activities
- communicate clearly and effectively with participants
- support participants in a polite and courteous manner
- observe the shooting ability of the participants
- provide feedback to participants on observed performance and shooting ability
- provide help and support to participants to support the development of their shooting technique
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the health and safety requirements associated with shooting and shoot days
- the relevant legal restrictions controlling the ownership and use of firearms
- the legal requirements controlling storage, transport and carriage of firearms and ammunition
- the requirements of shooting activities
- the shoot day preparations, including how to complete pre-use checks on firearms and ammunition
- the safety information required to support shoot days
- the importance of effective communication to ensure safety on shoot days
- shooting etiquette and protocols
- the different shooting activities and how they are implemented
- how to recognise the quarry species and their shooting requirements
- the likely (expected) behaviour of quarry species on shoot days
- the shooting technique suitable for the quarry range, pick-up and interception, and for the firearms and ammunition available
- how to fit firearms and how participant’s personal physical characteristics impact on firearm fitting and usage
- the effective ranges of firearms and ammunition including the absolute range
- the field conditions and their impact on shooting activities
- gun handling including how to load and hand over firearms to participants on the shooting field
- the communication skills required, including how to provide positive feedback on performance
- the importance of politeness in maintaining customer service
- the actions to take in the event of the shoot being disrupted by saboteurs
