Overview

This standard is about contributing to the development of a sporting plan. It has been developed so that it can be applied to any organised game shooting activities on any area of land used for game shooting.

This standard is aimed at those who work in game conservation on either a full- or part-time basis, and can be applied to any wildlife management area.

To meet this standard you will be able to:

  • determine the potential of the wildlife management area
  • suggest options for developing its sporting potential
  • contribute to the development of sporting plans
  • agree sporting plans with the shoot managers.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. analyse the records of previous sporting years to establish the effectiveness of previous activities and highlight development opportunities
  2. analyse records of previous resource usage to determine its efficiency
  3. assess options and outline proposals for the future sporting capability of the wildlife management area
  4. suggest targets and ideas for maintaining and improving the future sporting potential, based on your analysis
  5. contribute to the development and completion of a sporting plan
  6. identify the benefits of the sporting plan to wildlife and habitat conservation
  7. discuss and agree the requirements of the sporting plan, and its implementation, with the shoot manager
  8. agree the mechanisms for monitoring the sporting plan

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the characteristics and limitations of the wildlife management area
  2. the requirements of long- and short-term planning
  3. how to analyse records to establish the effectiveness of previous activities
  4. the importance of shoot records in determining the true sporting potential
  5. the principles of game management
  6. the legal requirements that control the management of game
  7. how to optimise the sporting capacity gained from wild and migrant game
  8. how to encourage the presence of wild and migrant game
  9. how habitat and wildlife management can be used to develop the potential of a wildlife management area
  10. the effect of sporting activities on other activities in the wildlife management area
  11. how to present your ideas in a way that promotes their understanding

Scope/range

Outline future sporting capacity in respect of one of the following:

  • wild game
  • reared game
  • migrant game
  • deer

     
    Suggest targets and ideas covering either game management or habitat management for:

  • the short term

  • the long term
