This standard outlines the competencies required by individuals who are responsible for developing and implementing a game bird production programme.

This standard is for those who work in game farming and who are responsible for developing a game bird production programme and establishing procedures to implement and monitor the programme.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:


  1. analyse the relevant information and data to determine the requirements for game bird production 
  2. seek specialist advice when required
  3. establish priorities and targets for game bird production, according to production requirements
  4. develop a game bird production programme with measurable aims and objectives 
  5. determine the resource requirements necessary to support the successful implementation of the game bird production programme
  6. determine the physical environment, husbandry, welfare and dietary requirements for the game birds being farmed
  7. establish measures to maintain suitable levels of animal welfare, hygiene and bio-security and confirm that they are implemented
  8. establish measures for the control of pests and predators

  10. establish working methods that maintain health and safety and are consistent with the relevant legislation, codes of practice and organisational requirements
  11.  establish procedures to manage constraints and emergencies that could affect the successful implementation of the game bird production programme
  12. establish the procedures necessary to implement and monitor the game bird production programme
  13. confirm that the planned game bird production programme complies with the relevant national legislation, codes of practice, sector guidance and organisational requirements
  14. consider the opinions of others, including those involved with or affected by the game bird production programme, as part of the overall programme development
  15. communicate the requirements of the game bird production programme to all those involved in its implementation 
  16. maintain records of game bird production as required by the relevant legislation, codes of practice and organisational requirements

  17. the importance of assessing risks for a game bird farming unit
  18. the importance of managing the land available to maximise the sustainability of its production capacity
