Overview

This standard is about managing the collection and analysis of fisheries data relating to the fisheries habitat and the fish within the fishery. It  covers managing the allocation of resources to support the collection of  data and controlling the data collection processes. It includes managing 
the analysis of the fisheries data collected and reporting the outcomes to all those involved.

This standard involves the management of all those responsible for the collection and analysis of fisheries data.  It also involves that management of equipment, materials and time in order to sample and collect fisheries data relating to population size, population age structure, condition of fish, size of individual fish and age of individual fish.

This standard requires the management of activities that monitor the fisheries habitat, including physical features, water quality and biological aspects (invertebrate monitoring).

This standard requires that you confirm that work is completed safely in line with relevant legal and health and safety requirements and that you ensure work maintains bio-security and minimises environmental disturbance, at all times.

The relevant legislation controlling the application of this standard will vary depending on the location of the fishery – in England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. confirm that all relevant procedures for collecting and analysing fisheries data are in place and that they meet relevant health and safety, environmental, bio-security and other legal requirements
  2. confirm that those involved in the collection and analysis of fisheries data are using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  3. establish systems for recording the collected and analysed fisheries data
  4. confirm the resources to manage the collection and analysis of fisheries data are available to carry out the work successfully
  5. manage the implementation of fisheries monitoring activities, in order to collect and analyse data, taking account of environmental conditions and resource constraints
  6. manage the collection and analysis of fisheries data and samples from live and dead fish in accordance with relevant specifications and organisational requirements
  7. manage the maintenance of fisheries monitoring activities to confirm that they comply with the relevant legal and organisational requirements
  8. manage any emergencies identified on the fishery whilst collecting fisheries data
  9. respond to the signs and presence of invasive species, where appropriate
  10. manage the analysis of fisheries data to determine the characteristics of the fishery
  11. maintain communication with the all those involved in the collection and analysis of fisheries data
  12. confirm that fisheries data is presented in accordance with relevant specifications and organisational requirements
  13. maintain management records as required by your organisation
  14. confirm that work is carried out safely in line with the relevant health and safety, environmental, bio-security, organisational and other legal requirements

  5. how to modify monitoring activities to take account of environmental conditions and resource constraints

  9. the types of data analysis techniques and the eventual use of fisheries data
  10. the processes used to age fish

  13. the factors that can influence the condition of the aquatic environment
  14. the types of invasive species and their impact on bankside and fisheries habitats

  16. the importance of collecting fisheries data in response to identified emergencies (i.e. habitat deterioration, predator actions, disease and human influences) and the appropriate sampling techniques to use
  17. the importance of communication with all those involved in the collection and analysis of fisheries data
  18. the relevant specifications and organisational requirements for the presentation of fisheries data
  19. the different techniques for presenting fisheries data
  20. the relevant standards for the collection and analysis of fisheries data
  21. the importance of hygiene and bio-security and its role in minimising risks to the fishery
