Overview

This standard is about planning and managing fish-capture operations in order to meet scheduled fishing objectives. It includes being able to establish fishing activities so that the resources required to support the operation are available, those involved fully understand the requirements and the planned approach suits the characteristics of the fishery and the fish being targeted.

This standard requires the management of people, equipment, materials and time to support fish capture in still water, running water and tidal waters. This requires planning the use of nets, hook and line, traps and pond drain down catch methods.  This does not include electrofishing which is covered in FiM12.

This standard requires that fishing equipment, boat(s), personal protective equipment, communication equipment, fish transport and holding equipment are correctly prepared. It also requires that fishing 
capture operations are scheduled to cover the survey type and specification, fishing technique, equipment usage, data collection and reporting.

This standard requires that you carry out work safely in line with relevant legal and health and safety requirements and that you work to maintain bio-security and minimise environmental disturbance at all times.

The relevant legislation controlling the application of this standard will vary depending on the location of the fishery – in England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. confirm that all activities required to plan and manage fish capture operations to meet scheduled fishing objectives, are carried out safely in line with relevant health and safety requirements
  2. assess the risks associated with the site and the proposed fish capture activity
  3. select and implement the appropriate working methods in accordance with the assessed risks
  4. plan fish-capture operations to meet the required scheduled fishing objectives
  5. obtain the necessary licences/permits for fish-capture operations from the relevant authorities
  6. manage the required resources to achieve the required scheduled fishing objectives, taking into account the characteristics of the water body
  7. confirm that those involved in fish-capture operations are using the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  8. confirm that those involved in the fish-capture operations are fully trained in the requirements of the organisation
  9. confirm that fish-capture equipment is prepared and maintained to the required standard of the fishery
  10. confirm that fish-holding facilities are in a condition suitable for receiving, processing and maintaining the health and wellbeing of fish
  11. manage fish-capture operations to meet the required scheduled fishing objectives, and be able to respond to variations
  12. adjust fish-capture operations to take account of changes in environmental conditions
  13. confirm the correct processing of captured fish and oversee the condition, health and wellbeing of captured fish throughout the operation
  14. communicate the fish-capture operational requirements to all those involved in the activity
  15. maintain accurate information in order to keep up-to-date records of fish-capture operations
  16. confirm all work is carried out in line with bio-security requirements, and that all waste and surplus materials are disposed of correctly

  1. your responsibilities under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation and codes of practice associated within fish capture operations
