Use non-capture monitoring technology to determine fish population characteristics

URN: LANFiM11
Business Sectors (Suites): Environmental Conservation, Fisheries Management
Developed by: Lantra
Approved: 2018

Overview

This standard is about using non-capture monitoring technology to determine fish population characteristics. It will include using electronic monitoring technology to determine fish population characteristics. It also includes preparing the monitoring equipment for use, setting up the fishing area, deploying the monitoring equipment and the safe use of equipment to collect data in both running water and still water.

It also requires that when necessary the fishing activity is modified due to allow for changes in water and environmental conditions.

This standard requires that you carry out work safely in line with the relevant legal and health and safety requirements and that you work to maintain bio-security and minimise environmental disturbance at all times.

The relevant legislation controlling the application of this standard will vary depending on the location of the fishery – in England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. carry out all activities required to safely use non-capture monitoring technology, in line with relevant health and safety requirements
  2. select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the work required
  3. obtain the required fishery survey specification to determine fish population characteristics
  4. assess the prevailing conditions to determine if it is safe to apply selected non-capture monitoring techniques
  5. prepare and maintain non-capture monitoring technology to the required standard for the fishery
  6. set up non-capture monitoring technology in the fishing area according to the requirements of the fish population survey
  7. control non-capture monitoring technology to meet the requirements of the fish population survey
  8. modify non-capture monitoring activities in response to changes in water and environmental conditions, in order to maintain their effectiveness
  9. record fish population data from the non-capture monitoring technology as per the required fishery survey specification
  10. observe the performance of the non-capture monitoring activity ensuring compliance with required fishery survey specification
  11. maintain effective communication with all those involved in the non-capture monitoring activity
  12. report any problems with the non-capture monitoring activity to the appropriate person
  13. sterilise, where appropriate, and store non-capture monitoring technology and other relevant equipment after use, in accordance with requirements
  14. maintain suitable levels of bio-security when using non-capture monitoring technology to determine fish population characteristics

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the relevant health and safety requirements associated with non capture monitoring activities
  2. the techniques and non-capture monitoring technology that are used to monitor fish population characteristics
  3. the advantages and disadvantages of techniques and non-capture monitoring technology used to determine fish population characteristics
  4. the uses of non-capture data in fisheries management
  5. the environmental conditions required for the deployment of non capture monitoring technology, as well as the potential impact of adverse environmental conditions
  6. how to prepare and maintain appropriate non-capture monitoring technology in a safe operating condition
  7. how water conditions can affect the quality of the fish population data collected (i.e. visibility, water flow, depth)
  8. the expected reaction of different fish species to non-capture monitoring technology
  9. the importance of bio-security during non-capture monitoring activities
