Overview

This standard describes how to inspect fencing to identify defects and ascertain repair options. The term "defects" includes components that are damaged or worn out. This standard also includes gates and barriers. This standard covers: • inspecting fencing and identifying any defective components • recommending and agreeing repair options. This standard is suitable for fence installation supervisors. It can be applied to support any type of fence.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. complete a site-specific risk assessment to identify hazards

    1. carry out your work in accordance with relevant environmental

    and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements

    and company policies and procedures

    1. wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)

    2. obtain fencing instructions and specifications

    3. inspect the fencing, including gates and barriers where fitted, to

    identify any defects in accordance with instructions and

    specifications

    1. determine the requirements for replacing fencing and fencing

    components, using measuring equipment where required

    1. record the defects as well as the materials required for repair

    2. identify the repair options that will restore the integrity of the

    fence and keep it fit for purpose

    1. agree the repair options and timescale with the relevant people in

    order to meet instructions and specifications and the resources

    available

    1. carry out your work in a manner that causes minimal impact to the

    surrounding area, other users of the site and anyone else who

    may be affected

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to carry out a risk assessment and why this is important

    1. the importance of complying with relevant environmental and

    health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements and

    company policies and procedures

    1. the type of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)

    suitable for the task

    1. where to obtain fencing instructions and specifications

    2. the specification and requirements of different fencing systems

    3. methods that can be used to inspect fencing, including gates and

    barriers where fitted, and identify their defects

    1. the factors to be considered during inspection

    2. the common defects associated with different fence types and

    how to recognise if they are present

    1. how to check the sizes and dimensions of components

    2. how to determine the repair options

    3. how resource limitations can affect repair options

    4. the advantages and disadvantages of the different repair options

    5. how to minimise the impact of your work on the surrounding area,

    other users of the site and anyone else who may be affected
