Work within coastal and marine environments

URN: LANEnC25
Business Sectors (Suites): Environmental Conservation
Developed by: Lantra

Overview

"This standard covers how to work within coastal and marine environments. The work could involve monitoring and reporting on physical and biological marine environments and/or marine developments (such as marinas, wind farms or dredging), assisting with or running dune restoration and/or managed retreat marine projects and/or working to reduce disturbance to marine habitat.
The standard addresses the skills needed to survey, monitor and manage marine habitats, including the identification of habitats and species in order to carry out marine conservation in the context of UK coastal zone management.
This standard is suitable for Environmental Policy Officers, Conservation Officers and Marine Ecologists."

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

"
1. assess the risks associated with the site and the work to be carried out
2. identify the range of local coastal and marine environments
3. identify marine zonation
4. identify the range of marine and coastal habitats within the marine environments
5. identify coastal and marine flora and fauna within those habitats
6. identify the uses of the local coastal and marine environments
7. identify historical and potential changes to the local coastal and marine environments
8. monitor and report on tides, waves and storm conditions
9. monitor and report on physical and biological environments
10. identify and report on the range of pollution risks and sources
11. work with organisations involved in managing coastal and marine environments
12. carry out your work out in accordance with relevant national legislation, local regulations, guidance, codes of practice and policies of your organisation
13. carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and policies of your organisation"

5. how to identify coastal and marine flora and fauna
6. how the local coastal and marine environment is used
7. how local coastal and marine environments have changed and will change over time
8. how to find out about and monitor tides, waves and storm conditions, and how they affect the local coastline and marine environments
9. a range of techniques for monitoring physical and biological environments
10. the types of pollution sources, potential risks and impacts
11. the organisations involved in coastal and marine managements, their roles and scope
12. the implications for your work of the relevant national legislation, local regulations, guidance, codes of practice and policies of your organisation
