Conduct an organisational Environmental audit and report findings
Overview
This standard describes the skills and knowledge requirements to conduct an organisational environmental audit. It includes conducting the audit, reporting the findings of the audit, and making recommendations for future action.
This standard is suitable for:
· A manager with responsibility for environmental management and/or sustainability
· An owner/manager of a business seeking to improve the environmental performance of the organisation
· An environmental management systems co-ordinator or equivalent
· An environmental auditor
· A consultant providing environmental advice.
This standard cover’s, conducting the audit to meet the required objectives and engagement and communication with all those involved in or affected by the audit.
It also covers reviewing the audit findings to producing a report. This includes engaging and communicating the audit finding and any recommended areas for improvement, with those responsible for implementing these actions.
Those involved in conducting an organisational environmental audit must consider carbon accounting and Life Cycle Assessments of the products, services, and activities offered by the organisation. This will involve assessing the carbon footprint of the products and services. Organisations need to be accountable for how they manage their impact on the environment, they need to become more sustainable. The organisation needs to look at their carbon impact at global as well as a local level. This will also involve assessing the impact.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- Conduct an organisational environmental audit in accordance with the audit objectives and measures of success
- Collect and verify objective audit evidence through interviews with relevant stakeholders, including those from protected characteristics, observation, and document feedback
- Whilst conducting the environmental audit communicate with relevant stakeholders, including those from protected characteristics, using the suitable methods required by the audit process
- Record the findings of the audit in the required format
- Generate the audit findings and prepare conclusions in accordance with the objectives of the audit and measures of success
- Report the findings of an organisational environmental audit against the specified objectives in a suitable manner
- Identify areas of organisational good practice and recommend areas for improvement of the organisation’s environmental performance based on the findings of the audit
- Agree any actions arising from the environmental audit with the person(s) responsible within the organisation for implementing actions
- Follow up outstanding actions with the person(s) responsible within the organisation for implementing actions
- Distribute the report to relevant stakeholders, including those from protected characteristics

- How to evaluate the organisations environmental processes and performance against the audit objectives
- How to evaluate audit findings against the audit objectives and measures of success
- The contents of a completed organisational environmental audit report
- How to derive recommendations for action from audit findings
- When to follow up outstanding actions with the those responsible within the organisation for implementing actions
