Overview

This standard describes the skills and knowledge requirements to monitor and evaluate the departmental or project energy usage and performance.  It includes how to manage organisational methods and processes to monitor and evaluate departmental or project energy usage and performance, how to obtain, analyse and record the information on energy performance and provide the information required to optimise energy performance.

This standard is for:

A manager with responsibility for energy management
An owner of a small business seeking to improve the energy performance of the organisation
An energy management systems co-ordinator or equivalent
An energy auditor
A consultant providing energy management advice.

This standard covers monitoring and evaluating energy performance results, producing reports and engaging and communicating with all those involved in optimising departmental or project energy performance.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

1. Define the scope and definition of the departmental or project energy performance processes which requires monitoring and evaluation 2. Review any departmental or project energy performance monitoring methods in line with requirements 3. Specify monitoring methods for energy consumption and where applicable review against existing methods 4. Produce a procedure to monitor and evaluate the departmental or project energy usage and performance 5. Identify all the resources required to implement the monitoring methods 6. Implement monitoring methods in line with timescales and resources 7. Obtain and record the information required for the evaluation of the departmental or project energy performance 8. Obtain energy performance information from the suppliers of products and processes supplied to the department or project 9. Document and record the departmental or project energy performance 10. Evaluate and analyse the departmental or project energy performance including information received from suppliers 11. Record and document the results of the evaluation following organisational requirements 12. Compare the results with current departmental or project energy requirements 13. Identify and agree areas where an improvement to the departmental or project energy performance is required 14. Communicate the departmental or project energy performance to relevant stakeholders, including those with protected characteristics

You need to know and understand:

  1. The processes requiring monitoring and evaluation
  2. The range of monitoring methods for evaluating departmental or project energy consumption and how to select the required system(s)
  3. How to collate and document information on monitoring methods and processes following organisational requirements
  4. How to estimate the resources required to implement the monitoring methods and processes
  5. How to gain approval for the required resources to implement monitoring methods and processes
  6. How to manage the resources to implement monitoring methods and processes
  7. How to obtain and document the information required to assess departmental or project energy efficiency from the monitoring methods and processes
  8. How to obtain energy performance information from suppliers of products and processes supplied to the department or project
  9. The range of suppliers and the information they can provide on the energy efficiency of their products and processes
  10. How to collate and document information on energy performance and efficiency
  11. The principles and processes of effective communication and how to apply them
  12. The range of evaluation and analysis methods and how to develop and apply relevant system(s)
  13. How to collate and document the results of evaluations and analysis
  14. How to use the findings of the evaluation to identify potential areas for improvement of departmental or project energy performance and the benefits of improvement
  15. The energy sources used by the department or project and the environmental impact of each one
