Develop an awareness of environmental good practice LEGACY
Overview
This standard describes the skill and knowledge requirements for individuals to develop an awareness of the impact of their activities and others on the environment and the importance of improving environmental performance within the work area or other activities. These impacts could include any of the following:
- Pollution (land, air, water)
- Climate change
- Resource depletion
- Biodiversity depletion
- Damage to ecosystems
It covers the understanding of environmental practices and policies that affect you, and your ability to identify where improvements could be made. It also covers knowing if activities are in line with environmental practices and encourages the development of environmental awareness in others.
This standard would be appropriate for team leaders, first line managers and workers to support the awareness and improvement of the environmental performance of the organisation. It is also applicable to individuals who need to understand the impact of their activities on the environment
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 review the impact of your activities on the environment
P2 identify how your practices impact the environment
P3 identify the environmental policies and practices that are relevant to your activities
P4 review the positive and negative impact of your activities on the environment
P5 report any potential negative impact
P6 encourage others to develop and maintain environmental awareness
P7 develop activities that support environmental good practice
P8 undertake activities and use resources that promote environmental good practice
P9 identify opportunities to reduce the negative and improve the positive impact on the environment
P10 communicate the benefits of implementing and maintaining good environmental practice
P11 encourage feedback from others on environmental practice
P12 monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of changes to work activities and use the findings to inform future practice

K1 the key issues facing the environment
K2 specific environmental issues which are relevant to your area of work
K3 the impact of your work or other activities on the environment
K4 the term ‘positive and negative impact’
K5 your role, responsibility and limits of authority relating to environmental practice
K6 the contribution which you can make to the environmental good practice of the organisation
K7 benefits to the organisation and to the environment of improved environmental good practice
K8 environmental legislation affecting your activities
K9 existing workplace or other environmental policies
K10 your social responsibilities in relation to environmental practice
K11 external and internal sources of information and guidance on environmental practice
K12 how to recognise areas where environmental practice can be improved
K13 the factors which may limit improvements to environmental performance
K14 the importance of organising activities that meet environmental policies
K15 the importance of selecting resources which minimise the environmental impact
K16 how to communicate good environmental practices to others
K17 ways of influencing and motivating others (internal and external) to improve environmental performance
