Deal with litter and fly-tipping incidents LEGACY
Overview
This standard covers dealing with litter and fly-tipping incidents, which could include sharps (needles, syringes, etc), hazardous waste, dead animals, bulky items and other waste.
You must be able to recognise hazards associated with various types of waste and take the appropriate measures to maintain your safety.
This involves identifying different types of waste and using safe methods of handling to segregate it into designated categories, dealing with sharps and other hazardous materials and minimising environmental damage. This may involve informing and working alongside other organisations.
This standard is suitable for anyone who deals with waste that has been left on land that they look after.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- assess the risks associated with the waste incident
- use safe handling techniques and suitable PPE to minimise health and safety risks when handling different types of waste
- examine the waste incident to establish the action required
- report the incident to the relevant authorities where required and seek advice and assistance
- take the appropriate measures to protect and maintain the safety of the public from the waste incident, where required
- maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in, or affected by, the waste incident
- select, prepare and use tools and equipment safely to deal with the waste incident
- identify and segregate different types of litter and waste in accordance with legal and local authority requirements
- deal with hazardous and unsafe litter and waste by taking the required action, in accordance with legal and local authority requirements
- deal with fly-tipping and other bulky waste in accordance with legal and local authority requirements
- deal with waste that could cause pollution using suitable methods depending on the type of waste
- minimise the environmental damage caused by the waste incident in accordance with legal and your organisation’s requirements
- complete records of the waste incident in accordance with legal and your organisation’s requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to identify hazards and assess risks
- the hazards that are associated with different types of waste
- the safe handling techniques and the correct selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when dealing with litter and fly-tipping incidents
- the types of waste that could be encountered, what needs to be reported, and where to seek advice and assistance
- the measures that can be taken to protect and maintain the safety of the public from the waste incident, such as signs and barriers, and when these are required
- the importance of maintaining communication with colleagues and others involved in, or affected by, the waste incident, and the best way to do this
- how to select, prepare and use tools and equipment safely to deal with the waste incident
- why waste needs to be segregated correctly and the different types of waste recognised by your local authority
- the legal requirements relating to certain types of litter and waste
