Overview
This standard covers the preparation required for the transportation of animals. It includes preparing the transport and ensuring the health, welfare and safety of the animals.
When transporting animals you should be trained, and hold the current certification where required, in accordance with the relevant legislation.
When carrying out your work you must consider the impact it will have on the environment.
This standard is suitable for anyone who prepares for the transportation of animals.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- assess the risks associated with the activity to be carried out
- wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- select, prepare, use, maintain and store the required tools and equipment safely and correctly
- check that the transport to be used is suitable for the animals being transported and complies with the relevant legislation
- check that the transport to be used for the transportation of animals is clean, safe, secure and ready to receive the animals
- confirm that the loading area and route is safe, secure and designed to ease the loading of the animals
- check information about the destination and expected time of arrival
- confirm that the containment of animals complies with the relevant legislation and optimises their health and welfare, including export requirements and restrictions, where relevant
- maintain communication with those involved in the transportation
- maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with business practices
- process waste safely and correctly, in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and business practices
- carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental, health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and business policies
- complete records as required by the relevant legislation and the business
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to identify hazards and assess risks with the transportation of animals
- the type of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for the activity
- the types of tools and equipment required and how to prepare, maintain, use and store them safely and correctly
- the suitable transport for the animals being transported, in accordance with the relevant legislation
- how the transport needs to be prepared for the animals, to maintain their safety, security, health and welfare
- the destination and estimated time of arrival, why this information is needed and the importance of confirming it
- the factors that cause animals stress when being transported and how to minimise this
- the legal requirements in relation to the stocking density and the number of animals being transported
- the importance of maintaining communication with those involved in the transportation and how this should be done
- the importance of maintaining hygiene and bio-security during preparation for the transportation of animals, and the methods for achieving this
- how to process the different types of waste produced by the activity
- your responsibilities for the welfare of animals under the relevant animal health and welfare legislation, animal transport legislation, codes of practice and busi-ness policies
- the legal requirements for training and certification when transporting animals
- your responsibilities under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and business policies
- the records that need to be kept and the importance of completing them

Legal requirements for training and certification:
Transporting animals over 65km and up to eight hours:
• Drivers and attendants responsible for the transport of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, domestic Equidae or poultry must hold a valid certificate of competence.
Transporting animals over eight hours:
• Anyone transporting cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, domestic Equidae or poultry over 65km must be competent to do so. Drivers and attendants must hold a valid certificate of competence.
Drivers must also hold the relevant licence to drive the vehicle, including a trailer, where used.
