Prepare and operate a powered vehicle with LEGACY
Overview
This standard covers the preparation and operation of a powered vehicle, such as ATVs, four wheel drives, quad bikes, skid-steers and bob-cats, with attachments. The standard does not cover the use of tractors with attachments. The standard covers the use of a powered vehicle with a range of attachments in a variety of weather conditions, ground conditions and terrain. These conditions will have an impact on the handling and use of the vehicle. When using a powered vehicle on the public highway you will need to hold the appropriate licenses for both yourself and the vehicle. You must carry out your work in a way which will consider any impact on the natural environment. This standard is suitable for anyone operating a powered vehicle with attachments on or off the public highway.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1: Wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment.
P2: Prepare appropriate powered vehicle by carrying out pre-start checks and adjustments in accordance with specifications and in line with current legislation.
P3: Confirm the powered vehicle is safe and ready for use.
P4: Check and adjust operator environment to meet personal requirements.
P5: Select appropriate attachments to carry out the required work.
P6: Make sure attachments are suitable for the vehicle.
P7: Make sure attachments are fitted securely and safely.
P8: Make sure attachment is set or calibrated if required.
P9: Check the immediate work area for hazards and obstacles before moving off.
P10: Use the correct warning signals at all times.
P11: Operate and manoeuvre the vehicle safely, and consistent with the type of vehicle, attachment and operation.
P12: Use attachments safely at all times.
P13: Make sure attachment is in transport position when not in use in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
P14: Modify operating procedures to take into account any changes in weather, ground conditions and types of terrain.
P15: Maintain the efficiency of powered vehicle and attachment performance through the appropriate handling and use of the vehicle.
P16: Deal with any hazards and obstacles encountered during operation in accordance with standard practice.
P17: Monitor the operation of the attachment and recognise faults.
P18: Stop and isolate powered vehicle on completion of activity in line with standard practice.
P19: Remove attachment in accordance with specifications.
P20: Leave the vehicle and attachment secure after use and in a suitable condition for future use.
P21: Carry out all work in accordance with relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and company policies.
