Prepare and operate small craft
Overview
This standard is about preparing and operating small craft which are used for support purposes.
This standard is for anyone who is responsible for operating a small craft to carry out their work.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
Prepare for the operation of small craft
1. carry out work safely in line with health and safety requirements
2. confirm that craft is in a safe operating condition suitable for the work requirement
3. confirm that propulsion and steering systems are in good working order suitable for the work
4. check that all boat safety equipment is in good working order including personal protective equipment, survival equipment and communication equipment
5. identify potential hazards, and take action to minimise risk during work activities
6. report any situation which is seen to cause additional risks to planned operations
Operate small craft
7. manoeuvre craft in support of operations, taking account of prevailing environmental conditions
8. complete all manoeuvres safely, staying within operating limits of craft, according to legal requirements
9. take action to maintain vessel safety when operating problems are encountered,
10. respond to man-over-board, manoeuvring craft to recover individual safely, according to recommended procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the health and safety requirements associated with small boat operations
- basic boat terminology
- the importance of completing procedural checks to craft, propulsion and safety systems
- the safety equipment required to maintain the safety of self and others
- how to maintain safety equipment in good working order
- the correct use of rope work and knots
- craft capabilities and operational limitations
- rules which control the safe operation of small craft
- how to obtain and interpret weather forecasts for area of operation
- the navigational hazards located in the area of operation
- the correct use of life jackets and buoyancy aids
- the emergency procedures for 'man-over-board'
- the dangers associated with immersion in water
