Overview

This standard covers the actions that should be taken to reduce and manage waste in your area of responsibility. For this standard, "waste" refers to anything that is created as a by-product or is left over from a process; anything that is no longer suitable for purpose or anything that is surplus to requirements.

The standard promotes the use of the waste management hierarchy to move towards the elimination of waste (the circular economy) by looking for ways to reduce, reuse, recycle or recover energy from the waste and deal with what is left in a way that has the least negative impact on the environment.

By investigating waste management options, you can reduce costs or even earn income from waste as well as contribute to preserving the environment.

You must comply with relevant waste management regulations.

This standard is for all workers.

Glossary

Circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them while in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.

* *

Processing e.g. crushing, chipping, breaking down into component parts

* *

Recover energy and produce fuel from waste using:

  • Anaerobic Digestion (AD)
  • gasification
  • pyrolysis
  • incineration

*
*

Re-use can be at a product or component level e.g.

  • direct re-use
  • refurbishment
  • repairs and upgrades
  • remanufacture

Waste management hierarchy:

  1. reduce
  2. reuse
  3. recycle
  4. recover
  5. dispose
