Overview
This standard covers assessing and responding to incidents of storm damage in your area of work and covers all types of damage.
You must be able to assess the potential for damage and put plans and procedures in place to respond and manage storm damage incidents. You must take action to maintain safety at all times when responding to incidents.
This standard is for those responsible for preparing for, and responding to, storm damage incidents.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- assess the potential for storm damage to occur in your area of responsibility
- implement measures to reduce the impact of storm damage, where possible, and to improve safety
- continuously assess safety in vulnerable areas and take action to warn people of the dangers of storm-related incidents
- develop plans and procedures to respond to and manage storm damage in your area of responsibility and share this with colleagues
- in the event of a storm related incident make an initial assessment of the damage and the safety of the area
- suspend activities that it could be unsafe to continue
- notify emergency services, utility companies and other responsible organisations, where necessary
- document the damage or photograph it for future investigation and possible insurance claims
- restrict access to the damage to maintain safety
- seek expert advice, where required, to ascertain next steps
- arrange for damage to be made safe and dealt with in an appropriate manner
- evaluate the effectiveness of the response to the incident and make any changes to plans and procedures to improve a future response
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the importance of assessing the potential for storm damage to occur in your area of responsibility and how to do this
- the measures that can be implemented to reduce the impact of storm damage and improve safety in your area of work
- the importance of continuous safety assessment of vulnerable areas and the actions that can be taken to warn people of the dangers of storm-related incidents
- how to develop plans and procedures to respond to and manage storm damage in your area of responsibility and to existing organisation plans and procedures
- the importance of making an initial assessment of the safety of the area and the damage and how this can be done safely
- the activities that it may be unsafe to continue
- who needs to be notified of the incident
- the importance of documenting or photographing the damage and when this information may be needed
- ways of restricting access to the damage to maintain safety
- when to seek expert advice and from where it can be obtained
- how to arrange for damage to be made safe and repaired, removed or otherwise dealt with
- the importance of evaluating the effectiveness of the response and making changes to plans and procedures to improve a future response
