Move animals under supervision and instruction
Overview
This standard includes the skills required to move different animals and settle them in their new location.
You will need to be aware of your own limitations and confirm that you meet the relevant legal responsibilities for providing a duty of care under current animal health and welfare legislation.
This standard is suitable for anyone who moves animals under instruction and supervision.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
carry out your work under supervision and instruction
comply with relevant animal health and welfare and animal-related legislation and associated codes of practice
maintain the health and safety of yourself and all those involved in the activity, and the welfare of the animal, during the work
maintain hygiene and bio-security in accordance with workplace instructions, organisational practice and the relevant legislation
maintain communication with colleagues and all those involved in, or affected by, your work
recognise when it is suitable to move the animals under supervision and instruction
approach the animals you are working with in a way which minimises stress or injury to the animals
handle and restrain animals, where required, using a suitable technique safely, in accordance with instructions and under supervision
move animals using the required equipment, in accordance with instructions and under supervision
recognise when the animal’s behaviour may indicate that you should not continue to move the animals
interact with the animals in a way which minimises stress or injury
maintain the welfare and security of the animals at all times
help to settle the animals after moving, in accordance with instructions
maintain the records required by the relevant legislation and organisational policy
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
the importance of completing the activity, under supervision and instruction from supervisor
your responsibilities under the relevant animal health, welfare and animal-related legislation and associated codes of practice
your responsibility under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, associated codes of practice and organisational policies
the importance of maintaining hygiene and bio-security when moving animals from one place to another, and how to achieve this
the importance of maintaining communication with those involved in, or affected by, your work and how this should be done
how to approach and handle animals you are working with in a way which minimises stress and injury to the animal
how to recognise normal and abnormal behaviour in the animals being moved and when it would not be appropriate to continue with the activity and report it to the supervisor
the correct techniques of handling the animals you are working with under supervision
the different kinds of equipment for moving animals, how to use the equipment safely and in the required manner whilst under supervision
the types of risks involved when moving animals and how these risks can be minimised
the normal pace of movement for the animals you are working with
how to settle animals after moving, and why this is important
how your actions or the actions of those involved in the activity may affect the behaviour and welfare of the animal
the problems that should be reported, when and to whom
the records that need to be kept and the importance of completing them in accordance with workplace instructions, the relevant legislation and organisational policy
