Overview


This standard covers the transportation of crops after harvesting.
 
If you are using a vehicle or mechanical equipment for the transportation of crops you should be trained, and hold the current certification where required, in accordance with the relevant legislation. When transporting crops on the public highway you must hold the appropriate licences for both yourself and the vehicle.
 
When carrying out your work you must consider the impact it will have on the environment, and work towards preserving and improving habitats and biodiversity and responding to and mitigating the effects of climate change.

This standard is suitable for those who transport harvested crops.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:


  1. assess the risks associated with the required activity
  2. wear suitable clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  3. select, prepare, use and maintain the required equipment, safely and correctly
  4. check the ground conditions and monitor the effect of the transportation equipment on soil structure
  5. operate equipment to transport harvested crops, in accordance with instructions and specifications and with due regard for the safety of others and the surroundings
  6. maintain hygiene and bio-security, in accordance with business practices
  7. position harvested crops on the transportation equipment safely and securely, and in a manner that protects them from loss, damage and contamination during transportation
  8. monitor the harvested crops during transit and take action as required
  9. maintain communication with colleagues and others involved in, or affected by, your work
  10. follow industry and business guidance to minimise environmental damage
  11. carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and business policies
  12. complete records as required by the relevant legislation and the business


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


  1. how to identify hazards and assess risks associated with transporting harvested crops
  2. the type of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for the activity
  3. the suitable transportation equipment for different crops, in accordance with instructions and specifications
  4. the types of transportation equipment required and how to select, prepare, use and maintain these safely and effectively
  5. the relevant legal requirements for the use of transportation equipment
  6. the correct way to operate transportation equipment and your limitations in relation to the operation of such equipment
  7. how to load and secure harvested crops for transit in order to maintain the safety of the load and minimise loss and damage
  8. the relevant methods of protecting the harvested crop from contamination or adverse weather conditions
  9. how to use transportation equipment in order to prevent damage to crops, equipment and the surrounding area
  10. how to monitor the condition of the harvested crop during transit
  11. the importance of maintaining hygiene and bio-security when transporting crops, and the methods for achieving this
  12. the importance of maintaining communication with those involved in, or affected by, your work and how this should be done
  13. the importance of following the relevant environmental and ecological best practice to help minimise the impact of your work on the environment
  14. your responsibilities under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and business policies
  15. the records that need to be kept and the importance of completing them
