Overview

This standard covers the provision of dispensed veterinary medicines under the direction of a Registered Qualified Person (RQP).

This standard is suitable for any member of a veterinary practice team who provide dispensed veterinary medication under the direction of the Registered Qualified Person (RQP).

A Registered Qualified Person is a Veterinary Surgeon, a Pharmacist or a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP).

The associated relevant legislation and practice health and safety procedures should be followed at all times when providing dispensed medicines.

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate regulations specify different categories of medicines and who is authorised to supply them:

POM-V (Prescription Only Medicine – Veterinary Surgeon)

POM-VPS (Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinarian, Pharmacist, SQP)

NFA-VPS (Non-Food Animal - Veterinarian, Pharmacist, SQP)

AVM-GSL (Authorised Veterinary Medicine - General Sales List – any member of practice).


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. confirm the client's requirements for veterinary medicines with the Registered Qualified Person (RQP)
  2. provide the Registered Qualified Person (RQP) with the required information as directed by a qualified veterinary surgeon or veterinary nurse, to enable the Registered Qualified Person (RQP) to prescribe the required medication
  3. provide the dispensed, specified, veterinary medicines to the client under the direction of the Registered Qualified Person (RQP)
  4. comply with relevant legislation, health and safety and practice guidelines relating to the provision of veterinary medicines at all times
  5. provide the client with advice on the use and disposal of veterinary materials under the direction of the Registered Qualified Person (RQP)
  6. maintain records of supplies in accordance with the relevant legislation and practice procedure under direction of the Registered Qualified Person (RQP)
  7. carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental and health and safety legislations, animal health and welfare legislation, risk assessment requirements, codes of practice and business policies

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the information that must be obtained from the client as directed by qualified veterinary staff to enable the Registered Qualified Person (RQP) to prescribe the required veterinary medication
  2. the process for supplying the Registered Qualified Person (RQP) with the required information to enable the Registered Qualified Person (RQP) to prescribe veterinary medicine
  3. the relevant legal requirements for the supply of veterinary medicines
  4. the relevant legislation, health and safety and practice guidelines associated with the provision of veterinary medicines
  5. the types of products and their legal veterinary medicine categories as set out by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate
  6. the correct storage and disposal procedures for veterinary medicines
  7. the importance of providing clients with advice on the use and disposal of veterinary materials in accordance with relevant legislation and veterinary practice procedure
  8. the relevant legal requirements and practice procedures for maintaining records relating to veterinary medicines
