Overview

This standard is about providing care for veterinary in-patients. It covers the observation, recording and reporting on the status of the veterinary in-patients while they are in veterinary accommodation.

This standard is suitable for Auxiliary Care Assistants in a veterinary practice working under the direction of qualified veterinary staff.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. confirm the care requirements for veterinary in-patients with the qualified veterinary staff
  2. use the required veterinary practice infection control procedures for the area of the veterinary practice you are working in
  3. wear the required clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  4. prepare and use the equipment and materials required for the care of veterinary in-patients
  5. observe, record and report on veterinary in-patients under the direction of qualified veterinary staff
  6. provide care to the veterinary in-patient under the direction of qualified veterinary staff 
  7. provide the nutrition and fluids required for the veterinary in-patients and their condition as instructed by qualified veterinary staff
  8. maintain the security of the veterinary in-patients to protect them from injury, or escape
  9. maintain records of observations of the veterinary in-patients, as instructed by qualified veterinary staff
  10. carry out your work in accordance with the relevant environmental, health and safety, animal health and welfare legislation, risks assessments, codes of practice and business policies

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the importance of confirming the care requirements for veterinary in-patients with qualified veterinary staff
  2. the required veterinary practice infection control procedures relevant to the area of the veterinary practice you are working in
  3. the types of clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the care of veterinary in-patients
  4. how veterinary in-patients should be observed and the methods of recording and reporting observations to qualified veterinary staff
  5. the indications that veterinary in-patients may be deteriorating or in distress and why it is important to bring this to the attention of qualified veterinary staff
  6. how and when to provide contact and care for veterinary in-patients and how this can help the veterinary in-patients physical welfare and health
  7. the types of equipment and techniques used for providing nutrition and fluids to veterinary in-patients
  8. the different types of accommodation required for individual veterinary in-patient care
  9. the required security for the veterinary accommodation
  10. your responsibility under the relevant environmental and health and safety legislation, animal health and welfare legislation, codes of practice and business policies
