Overview

This standard is about planning and implementing employee relations strategy. The strategy is required for ensuring that the relationship between an organisation and its employees is managed appropriately and in accordance with employment legislation. It includes ensuring that policies, practices and procedures are comprehensive, aligned with organisational values and culture and well understood both within the HR function and the wider organisation. It covers resolving employee relations issues and negotiating with employee representatives.

This standard is for HR professionals who are involved in planning and implementing employee relations strategy.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify your organisational values, goals and objectives
  2. collate all organisational policies and practices and align the employee relations strategy with them
  3. align human resource materials with up-to-date legislation, codes of practice and organisational culture
  4. design and deliver an appropriate training plan to reach and maintain compliance of all employees
  5. integrate all employee relations policies, practices and procedures into the HR function
  6. monitor managers’ compliance with employee relations policies and practices
  7. disseminate employee relations policies and practices to all employees and ensure these are read and acknowledged by all employees
  8. resolve employee relations issues in accordance with organisational policies and procedures
  9. negotiate with employee representatives on employee relations issues
  10. keep secure records of employee relations issues

  1. your organisational strategies, values, goals and objectives
  2. the sectors in which your organisation operates and the market factors impacting on its performance
  3. the sources of specialist information and expertise and how to access it
  4. how human resource levers drive organisational performance
  5. the relevant legislation in reference to employee relations
  6. the organisation’s employee relations policies, practices and procedures
  7. the methods of communicating employee relations policies, practices and procedures to employees
  8. the types of support employees may require with employee relations policies, practices and procedures
  9. how to integrate employee relations policies, practices and procedures within the HR function
  10. the consequences of non-compliance with employee relations policies, practices and procedures
  11. how to apply a range of interpersonal skills and expert knowledge to resolve employee relations issues
  12. the negotiation and mediation techniques and how to apply these in negotiations with employee representatives
  13. the records that are required for employee relations issues and how long to keep them
  14. the principles of agility, continuous improvement and business partnering needs
  15. the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) practices
  16. the relevant data protection regulation
