Overview

This standard is about supporting tenants and residents in developing the skills required to be able to contribute to decision making in tenant/resident groups and/or wider housing governance groups.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify tenants and residents who want to contribute to decision making at tenant, resident or wider housing governance groups
  2. obtain tenants and residents' views about the additional skills and support they require to enable them to participate
  3. support tenants and residents to ask questions and verify points in meetings

  4. identify and agree the support requirements of tenants and residents based on their views and keep a record of these

  5. identify meetings and training which meet the support requirements of tenants and residents and agree for then to take part
  6. confirm and discuss progress with addressing their support needs with tenants and residents
  7. review and evaluate the process and make improvements to future practice

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to identify tenants' and residents' skills and support requirements to enable them to contribute to decision making at housing governance groups
  2. how to communicate and support tenants and residents
  3. the types of barriers to communication and how these can be minimised
  4. the different interviewing and questioning techniques for individuals and groups
  5. your organisation's equal opportunities policy and practice
  6. your role in developing the skills of tenants and residents
  7. the role of relevant colleagues in developing the skills of tenants and residents 
  8. the existing resources available from your organisation to support tenants and residents to contribute to decision making
