Overview
This standard covers the skills and knowledge needed to develop policies and guidelines to support the efficient use of transport in support of food and drink manufacture and distribution. It includes the skills required to promote efficient transport usage in a food and drink environment.
This standard is for you if you work in food and drink operations and your job requires you to have responsibility for improving the efficient use of transport in support of food and drink manufacture. You may have management responsibilities for an operational team.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- establish current levels of transport usage
- identify legal requirements that control transport usage
- identify opportunities for improving transport efficiency by optimising vehicle routes
- specify efficiency measures and targets for each area of transport usage
- identify potential barriers that may limit transport efficiency
- specify monitoring procedures and their frequency to control transport usage
- identify opportunities for sourcing low carbon fuel
- advise on design of processes and products to help ensure efficient transport usage
- promote and support implementation of efficiency measures for all areas of transport usage
- promote application of low carbon energy in transport usage
- define and allocate roles and responsibilities to improve transport efficiency
- identify training needs and organise training for those responsible for improving transport efficiency
- develop and implement strategies to overcome barriers that limit the impact of efficiency measures
- establish methods to evaluate the impact of measures to improve transport efficiency
- support implementation of monitoring and control procedures
- evaluate impact of measures to improve the efficiency of transport
- specify benefits achieved through efficiency measures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the impact of food and drink transport on the environment and sustainability
- how transport usage impacts on environmental issues such as climate change
- legal requirements that control transport usage
- government targets for reducing food miles
- environmental, economic and social cost of food miles
- causes and sources of carbon emissions from food miles
- benefits of efficient transport usage to the organisation
- how food miles are determined
- how to establish current levels of transport usage in respect to all organisational activities and the supply chain
- transport costs and how they are formed
- how to assess organisational efficiency in food and drink transport
- principles of benchmarking sustainable food and drink transport against best practice in industry
- opportunities available for reducing food miles
- barriers that can limit the reduction of food miles and how these barriers can be overcome
- methods available for reducing food miles
- logistical efficiency and benefits it offers
- benefits of best practice initiatives including "fewer miles" and "friendlier miles"
- how to monitor and maintain a reduction in food miles
- how effective process control and quality assurance can support efficiency within the supply chain
- how to complete an organisational cost/benefit analysis in respect to transport usage
- methods of promoting efficient transport usage
- how to monitor, control and maintain the efficient use of transport
- organisational audit requirements
- how to define and allocate roles and responsibilities for all those involved in improving transport efficiency across all the activities undertaken by the organisation
- how to identify training needs and organise staff training to support efficient transport usage
- how to evaluate the impact of measures to improve transport efficiency
- how to act as a role model for promoting efficient transport usage
