Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge integral to effluent treatment.

This includes processes involving the effluent treatment plant, bio plant and the water treatment plant. You will need the skills and knowledge to prepare for effluent treatment, control and complete the process, prepare equipment, monitoring and controlling operations.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. control effluent treatment in accordance with relevant organisational health and safety requirements, quality standards, environmental standards and Revenue and Customs requirements
  2. use emergency equipment and personal protective equipment in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer's instructions
  3. obtain relevant operational instructions and confirm that information received on the current operational status meets organisational requirements
  4. carry out checking procedures and take relevant action within limits of your authority
  5. confirm the treatment areas are clean and prepared for processing in accordance with organisational requirements
  6. follow treatment procedures in accordance with organisational requirements
  7. adjust process variations to maintain treatment in accordance with organisational requirements
  8. undertake quality checks in accordance with organisational specifications
  9. confirm the treated effluent and any other products of the process meet organisational specification
  10. identify treated effluent that is out of specification and report it to relevant colleagues
  11. shut down the plant in accordance with organisational procedures
  12. identify and take relevant action to deal with faults and any operational issues
  13. communicate with relevant colleagues when controlling effluent treatment operations in accordance with organisational requirements
  14. complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to control effluent treatment in accordance with the current legislation and the organisational health and safety, hygiene, environmental, quality standards and instructions, Revenue and Customs requirements
  2. the nature and hazards of effluent and treatment materials and precautions to be used in handling them
  3. the procedures for checking and making ready process equipment
  4. how to use the process equipment safely
  5. the emergency equipment associated with the process and how to use it
  6. how to handle effluent and treatment materials
  7. the situations which might interfere with processing and corrective actions to be taken
  8. the consents and authorisations which apply to the operation and what may happen if these are not adhered to
  9. the methods of monitoring the effluent treatment process
  10. the symptoms of out of specification processing
  11. the methods of process adjustment to meet organisational specification
  12. how to carry out sampling and interpreting the results
  13. the organisational procedures for dealing with spillage
  14. the organisational procedures for dealing with effluent, out of specification effluent, any other products of the treatment process, and residual treatment materials from the work area
  15. the procedures for normal or maintenance shutdown
  16. the relevant legal controls and cost implications and impacts of effluent treatment operations
  17. the need for checking procedures and what may happen if they are not followed
  18. the effect of equipment and services not performing to specification or economic use and the remedial action to be taken
  19. when personal protective equipment is required, how it is used, and what may happen if it is not used
  20. why it is important to keep records and what might happen if this is not done
  21. what should be communicated, to whom and why it should be done
  22. the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
