Overview

This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to place full casks into maturation and storage and continuous monitoring to ensure prompt identification of any defects during handling or storage.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. store and monitor full casks in accordance with relevant organisational health and safety requirements, quality standards, environmental standards and Revenue and Customs requirements
  2. use personal protective equipment in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer's instructions
  3. obtain relevant operational instructions and confirm that information received on the current operational status meets organisational requirements
  4. carry out checking procedures and take relevant action within limits of your authority
  5. assess and prepare the storage area in accordance with organisational requirements
  6. confirm the equipment and services are available and suitable for use
  7. store full casks, making the best use of available space, in accordance with organisational requirements
  8. complete manual and electronic stock records in accordance with organisational requirements
  9. undertake routine monitoring of casks according to organisational requirements
  10. identify and take relevant action to deal with defective or compromised casks
  11. dispose of waste and excess materials in accordance with organisational requirements
  12. communicate with relevant colleagues when storing and monitoring full casks in accordance with organisational requirements
  13. complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to store and monitor full casks in accordance with the current legislation and the organisational health and safety, hygiene, environmental, quality standards and instructions, Revenue and Customs requirements
  2. how casks are designed
  3. why it is important to confirm that equipment, casks storage materials and storage locations are suitable for use
  4. what types of defects may arise on equipment, storage materials and storage locations and how to address these defects
  5. what types of handling and securing equipment, including portable, free standing or parts of a vehicle are used
  6. why it is important to make best use of securing equipment
  7. how to store full casks in accordance with organisational requirements
  8. how to identify defective casks
  9. why it is important to ensure that defective casks are dealt with in accordance with organisational requirements
  10. the need for checking procedures and what may happen if they are not followed
  11. when personal protective equipment is required, how it is used, and what may happen if it is not used
  12. the importance of the disposal of waste and excess materials in accordance with organisational requirements
  13. why it is important to keep records and what might happen if this is not done
  14. what should be communicated, to whom and why it should be done
  15. the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
