Overview
This standard covers the skills and knowledge required to fill casks. It can apply to the control of semi-automatic or manual filling processes.
This will include the preparation and filling of casks in accordance with organisational requirements and can involve equipment including cask filler and heads/nozzles.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- carry out cask filling in accordance with relevant organisational health and safety requirements, quality standards, environmental standards and Revenue and Customs requirements
- use personal protective equipment in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer's instructions
- obtain relevant operational instructions and confirm that information received on the current operational status meets organisational requirements
- carry out checking procedures and take relevant action within limits of your authority
- confirm the product, equipment and services are available and suitable for use
- prepare casks for filling in accordance with organisational procedures
- start up the filling process to organisational specification and check that it is working
- carry out sample checks in accordance with organisational specification
- monitor the filling process and cask integrity in accordance with organisational specification
- seal and label the filled casks in accordance with organisational procedures
- deal with loss or spillage according to organisational specification
- finish the filling process according to organisational requirements
- identify and take relevant action to deal with faults and any operational issues
- dispose of waste and excess materials in accordance with organisational requirements
- communicate with relevant colleagues when carrying out cask filling in accordance with organisational requirements throughout the process
- complete all records in accordance with organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to carry out cask filling in accordance with the current legislation and the organisational health and safety, hygiene, environmental, quality standards and instructions, Revenue and Customs requirements
- how casks are designed
- the protective and handling equipment required for filling casks
- the factors impacting on performance of the cask filling process
- how to seal and label casks
- the different start up and shut down procedures and what may happen if the process is not started and shut down in the correct sequence
- the need for checking procedures and what may happen if they are not followed
- the effect of equipment and services not performing to organisational specification or economic use and the remedial action to be taken
- the effect of the filling operation not performing to organisational specification or economic use and the remedial action to be taken
- the importance of quality procedures and what may happen if they are not carried out in accordance with organisational requirements
- when personal protective equipment is required, how it is used, and what may happen if it is not used
- the importance of the disposal of waste and excess materials in accordance with organisational requirements
- why it is important to keep records and what might happen if this is not done
- what should be communicated, to whom and why it should be done
- the limits of your authority and the consequences of exceeding them
